DSPS PROVIDES

DSPS provides educational support for eligible SBCC students with disabilities of all kinds such as mobility, vision, hearing, speech, or learning disabilities; seizure disorders; head injuries; psychological disabilities such as bipolar disorder and severe anxiety or depression; attention deficit disorder; back injuries; carpal tunnel syndrome; or chronic illness such as AIDS, diabetes and lupus.

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
  • Student is enrolled in SBCC credit courses
  • Student has a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Student has current functional limitations in a college setting
  • Requested service is reasonable in an academic setting
ELIGIBILITY PROCEDURE
  • Student completes REQUEST FOR ACCOMMODATION
  • Student contacts DSPS faculty to present disability documentation from licensed professionals such as medical doctors, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, audiologists, ophthalmologists or learning disabilities specialists.
  • Some students may demonstrate unusual learning difficulties but have no previous learning disability documentation or have incomplete documentation. If the student is enrolled in SBCC credit classes and is at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate the student may complete the DSPS Learning Disabilities Assessment.
DSPS PHILOSOPHY

DSPS is committed to facilitating independence and integration in a fully accessible college environment. DSPS wishes to ensure that the student with a disability has a method of independently demonstrating skill competency. DSPS approves accommodations that comply with SBCC's academic standards, student code of conduct, fundamental requirements of the curriculum, and integrity of the instructor-student relationship.
