# 7 – To Thine Own Self be True.
- Introductory courses need more attention
as they address a broader audience and are often more
difficult to design, implement and teach.
- In advanced courses let more of you
and your discipline’s skills and idiosyncrasies
come through.
- Engage in a realistic assessment
of your skills and teaching styles. Your first class
will not be perfect. Was your first face-to-face
course perfect? Probably not, but you kept learning
and improving and hopefully found each challenge an opportunity
to learn something new. The same is true online.
Trick # 7 – Have
fun!
- While you may need to be patient
with yourself as you learn, life is too short to engage
in work you do not enjoy.
- Is online or hybrid teaching really
for you?
- Do you like writing?
- Do you like to read students'
work?
- Do you like to play with
technology, or is it drudgery?
- Do you enjoy finding imagery
to illustrate a point?
- Are you happier with organization
or with the opportunity to shift on a dime in energetic
classroom exchanges?
- Are you able to visualize your
students' learning and build relationship without
actually meeting them?
- Let your personality shine through
the course just as it does in your face-to-face classes.
